Black Twitter was in an uproar this week when news broke that a financial aid worker and law student at Howard University allegedly stole over $400,000 of financial aid money that was supposed to go to students attending the University.
In the past 10 years there has been over a million dollar of financial aid fraud resulting in the firing of 7 staff members, including the infamous Tyrone Hankerson Jr. With the embezzled money Tyrone was able to be a Howard law student as well as a fashion blogger who frequently traveled the world with his media team.
The President of the University stated that he was alerted in December 2016 that there may have been some misappropriation of University-provided financial aid funds.” After this, he says he initiated an audit that investigated the entire staff resulting in six people getting fired awaiting a legal trial. The University released a statement saying, “An investigation of individual employee actions was completed in September 2017 and as a result, six employees have been fired for gross misconduct and neglect of duties. We will refer this matter for criminal prosecution, as appropriate.”
Many students and parents are angry with the University because they were not notified of the financial aid fraud until this week when word got out about Tyrone Hankerson Jr.
The President of the University insists no students were harmed during the 10 years of embezzlement, but people are disagreeing being that earlier this year there were numerous stories of Howard University students on social media that were homeless because of the lack of financial aid support. Which is very cruel knowing that a fellow Bison that knows of his classmates struggles would use tuition money to “flex for the gram.”
Tyrone Hankerson has since deleted all of his social media accounts, but people were able to screen shot him in pictures wearing designer clothes right before his exit. There are numerous memes on Twitter and Instagram of people making fun of “Tyrone the Flex God” and “The Wolf of U Street.”
Tyrone recently made a statement to ABC saying “When the truth comes out, it will be confirmed that I followed all rules and protocol with the approval of the, then, financial aid officers in any grants, scholarships or awards given to me as a student who attended class all year round and traveled abroad. The story that was posted…fails to explain the full scope of my 7-year experience at Howard University and is most misleading if taken out of context.”
No matter what the outcome of the trial is, the hope is that in the future students will receive all of their financial aid money so that they can continue to have thriving college careers.
As far as Tyrone Hankerson many doubt that he will ever be able to obtain his law degree from Howard or one day to be a Lawyer. What do you think
